About

Martin Backes, born in 1977 in Germany, is an artist, designer, creative technologist, director, hacker and composer. He studied media art and design at the University of Arts in Berlin with Prof. Joachim Sauter (ART+COM) and Prof. Dr. Alberto de Campo. Furthermore he studied Sound Studies (M.A.) at the University of Arts in Berlin with Prof. Karl Bartos (Kraftwerk), Prof. Dr. Holger Schulze, Prof. Carl-Frank Westermann and Prof. Sabine Breitsameter. In 2009 he received a grant for the Master`s Program “Sound Installation” run by Prof. Christina Kubisch. In his works, he often uses media technologies to reflect certain functionalities, effects, ideologies and human perception. Backes cross-border and experimental field of activity in the intermediate area of art and science ranges from sculptural and multimedia sound works to interventions in public spaces and installations, as well as radio plays and computer/video works. His work has been shown at numerous international exhibitions and festivals: CTM (DE), BIAN/Elektra (CA), EMAF (DE), New Aesthetic Expo (NL), Mediamatic Amsterdam (NL), MuseumsQuartier Wien (AT), TEDx (ES), International Spy Museum (US), Belgrade City Museum (RS), Mochvara Gallery (HR).
Besides his experimental work, he is working as a creative director & technologist, audiovisual consultant, sound & media designer and lecturer. Martin Backes is co-founder of aconica – a creative studio and laboratory as well as a creative workshop constantly working on commercial, artistic and independent projects in the fields of culture, industry and research.
